about

Miramar brings nostalgic songs about love and anti-love to a new generation. They revive the bolero – a song form that originates in Latin America - by following in the footsteps of the great troubadours of the 1950's and 60’s. They perform a mix of original and classic tunes with the customary instrumentation of guitar, piano, bass and percussion plus the unique addition of farfisa and B3 organs. The real captivation of Miramar is heard in the beautiful harmonies created between vocalist Rei Alvarez and Laura Ann Singh who possess uncanny chemistry in their deliverance of this emotionally rooted music. The majority of the repertoire is sung in Spanish but a portion is also sung in Greek, Italian and Portuguese drawing from music of similar international song movements that paralleled the Latin American revolution.

Alvarez, a gifted lyricist, composer and visual artist, was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. His passion for the arts and music comes from a strong family lineage of musicians including the illustrious composer Don Juan Morel Campos, who is known as the father of the "Danza Puertorriquena". Along with leader and keyboardist Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña, they are distinguished members of the internationally acclaimed Salsa band Bio Ritmo where they have collaborated on numerous compositions. Simmons, an accomplished pianist, raised by a Chilean mother, had the idea of forming a bolero project for many years. Then in the spring of 2009 Alvarez was asked to sing an impromptu duet with vocalist Laura Ann Singh - a renowned interpreter of Brazilian music, known for her work with Quatro Na Bossa. The result was an unforgettable musical moment that gave birth to Miramar.

Miramar self-released a 7 song EP and toured Puerto Rico in the summer of 2010. Many of the songs featured on this recording are by the Puerto Rican composer Sylvia Rexach who is recognized as one of the island’s greatest composers of bolero music. Rexach, along with Felipe ‘La Voz’ Rodriguez and Duo Irizarry de Cordoba represent some of Miramar’s earliest influences and inspirations. The EP also includes two originals featuring music by Simmons and lyrics by Alvarez and his mother Nelida Morel – a poet who still resides in Puerto Rico.

Track Name: Estatua (Te Creo)
"estatua"

te creo, te creo,
aunque falte en tu voz sinceridad

tiemblo de verte, y tu sin verme
tu mirada vacia, que me habla
volumenes dia tras dia

te creo, te creo,
aunque falte calor en tu tocar

mano en mano,
me acostumbre
al invierno de tu pensar
tranquilo infierno de contigo estar

te creo, te creo,
aunque falte respuesta en tu hablar

error quererte, peor no amarte

me acostumbre
